CAIC Is The First Student-Run Anthropology Conference for High-Schoolers

1st Conferences

Shenzhen, China

On September 7-8, 2024, the first China Anthropological Inquiry Conference was successfully concluded in Shenzhen, China. The conference focused on Nantou Ancient City, Dafen Oil Painting Village and Hi-Tech Park in Shenzhen as the main sites for fieldwork, providing the participating scholars with a wide range of observation and communication opportunities.

Through fieldwork and report writing, the scholars discussed individual life and values in modern social changes, and produced many in-depth research results.

We were honored to welcome Professors Tang Yong and Qi Tengfei to our conference, where they presented on "Traversing the Fields: Discovering Society," "The Direction of Humanities and Social Sciences Learning," and "Aging Society and Elderly Care Beyond the Family."

Professor Tang Yong, from Shenzhen University's School of Sociology and Director of the Social Work Education Center, brought extensive expertise in social welfare, mental health, and educational sociology. Her lecture "Traversing the Fields: Discovering Society" highlighted the importance of fieldwork in sociology, focusing on the imaginative and interpretive skills necessary for navigating complex social environments. In her discussion on "The Direction of Humanities and Social Sciences Learning," she addressed the relevance of these fields, outlining various career paths and essential competencies such as critical thinking and effective communication.

Dr. Qi Tengfei, a prominent figure in gerontology, presented "Aging Society and Elderly Care Beyond the Family." This talk critiqued traditional family-centered care models and explored innovative alternatives prompted by the aging population. Dr. Qi examined the role of non-familial institutions, such as Buddhist temples and communal living arrangements, discussing the cultural, social, and economic factors influencing these emerging care models.
